How this ranking is calculated

Measures racial and ethnic diversity in the undergraduate student body, rewarding schools where no single group makes up an outsized majority.

Source measurement years vary and may precede the ranking edition. The update date records the published dataset, not when every outcome was measured.

What drives the score

  • Distribution of enrollment across racial and ethnic groups
  • Evenness of representation (schools are penalized for extreme concentration in any single group)

Data sources

  • Federal government enrollment demographic data reported by institutions

This ranking uses an entropy-based diversity index, meaning a school where students are spread evenly across many groups scores higher than one dominated by a single group — even a historically underrepresented one.
